Where to begin...

It’s a common misconception that piling on hair products will leave your hair feeling heavy. However, this isn’t entirely true! When your choose products that match your hair type and apply them correctly, layering multiple hair products can be the magic to achieving your desired results.

Your hair has its own personality and treating it right involves understanding its unique needs. The key? Picking the right combination of haircare products to boost its health, enhance its fabulous texture, and amp up your hair’s style.

It’s time for you to embrace the power of strategic hair product layering, and say hello to hair that’s ready to reach new heights!

Mix it up!

Here is a great example of perfect product layering...

Volumising at the roots: Applying a volumising product like a mousse or root-lifting spray, adds lift and boosts volume, helping your hair to look fuller and add body from the base.

Sleekness for the ends: On the other hand, applying a serum or lightweight oil to the ends of your hair, helps to maintain smoothness, tame frizz, and add shine, keeping the ends looking sleek and polished!

Let’s break it down. By focusing the volumising product at the roots of your hair, you can achieve that perfect lift and fullness without making the ends feel heavy. At the same time, a smoothing product at the tips ensures they stay sleek and frizz-free, creating a balanced and polished hairstyle.

Mixing hair products with different goals lets you create your own customised haircare plan! You can tackle various concerns all at once without compromising your style.

If you don’t have all six steps in your regime, simply use the products you do have in their numerical order. The typical order for layering hair products is as follows:

Pre-shampoo 0

Begin your haircare routine with a pre-shampoo treatment. Applying this before you shampoo helps to nourish and condition the hair and scalp.

It’s recommended to follow the instructions for application on the product. These may involve applying the treatment to dry or damp hair before shampooing.

Some pre-shampoo treatments are designed to address issues for the scalp such as dry skin and dandruff, while others focus on hair health and moisture.

Shampoo 1

Cleanse your hair and scalp with your recommended shampoo. Applying shampoo twice as a part of your haircare routine can be nourishing for a deep and thorough hair cleanse.

The first shampoo application can help to eliminate any product buildup and environmental impurities. The second application can then penetrate deeper and deliver the nourishing treatment properties from the specialist shampoos more effectively.

Conditioner 2a

A core element of your haircare is applying conditioner. After shampooing and rinsing thoroughly, use conditioner and focus on the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair. These parts of your hair tend to be drier and need more nourishment. Leave the conditioner on for the recommended time - usually a few minutes - and then rinse out.

Mask or hair treatment 2b

If you are using a mask or hair treatment, then apply it in place of your conditioner (unless individual instructions state otherwise).

These haircare products are fantastic at providing deep hydration and repair. For an even distribution, brush the treatment or mask through using a suitable wet brush. Then leave the treatment or mask on for the recommended time as specified on the product’s label. After, rinse your hair thoroughly.

Leave-in conditioner 3

Incorporating a leave-in conditioner into your haircare routine will completely level up your hair game! These products support detangling your hair, causing less breakage, while also providing other benefits such as heat and UV protection.

Apply a leave-in conditioner after washing and conditioning your hair, and before brushing and drying. You need to apply the hair product to towel dried hair, concentrating the conditioner from mid-lengths to the ends and then distribute it evenly by brushing your hair using a wet brush or detangling comb.

Heat protectant

Protecting your hair from heat is essential before styling if you are using styling tools such as a hair dryer, hair straighteners, or curling tongs, to help shield your hair from the damaging effects of heat.

Some heat protectant products should be applied to wet hair before drying. In this case, you need to use the heat protectant before any other hair styling products. Others may need to be used on dry hair before using styling tools so simply apply after drying your hair.

We recommend that you follow the directions for the specific product you’re using for optimal results. If you have used a leave-in conditioner treatment beforehand that already contains heat protection ingredients, then you can skip this step. However, a little extra protection will never hurt!

Styling 4

After your hair is clean and protected from heat, you can apply any styling products of your choice. It’s important to not go overboard with your hair products because it could make your hair feel heavy and lead to buildup. We recommend starting with a little bit, then add more if you need to. Also, make sure to check the instructions on each product for the best way to use them.

Depending on your desired hairstyle, the order of application may vary. Typically, application will follow this order:

Mousse or volumising products: If you are looking for hair volume, apply these hair products at the roots to lift your hair, then brush through towards the ends.

Hair serum or oil: Serums and oils add shine and smoothness to your hair. Rub a few drops of the product between your palms first, then apply the serum or oil evenly to the ends of your hair and work your way up, avoiding the roots on wet hair. These products can also be used sparingly on dry hair once you have styled it to help create extra shine and brighten your locks!

Hair styling cream or gel: For hold and styling, use a cream or gel. We recommend using this hair product sparingly, beginning at the mid-lengths and working out towards the ends.

Finishing 5

These haircare products are applied once your hair is dry and styled to set your hair and add the final touches.

Hair serum or oil: This versatile product can be applied once your hair is dry, adding shine and smoothness to your hair. Simply rub a few drops of the product between your palms first, then apply the serum or oil evenly to the ends of your hair and work your way up, avoiding the roots.

Texturising spray: Use this styling product before shine or hairspray, to create a fuller or more textured look for your hair.

Shine spray: All you need is a light mist sprayed over your finished hairstyle to create a stunning reflective shine. Make sure to use shine spray before hairspray.

Hairspray: The finishing touch! Apply hairspray to your finished look to lock in your style and keep your locks luscious for hours!

Dry shampoo: This is a personal must-have! Dry shampoo is a haircare product that can absorb excess oil from your hair, if it’s looking a little greasy between washes. Pro Tip: Find your hair is fine and falls flat? Use dry shampoo once your hair is dried and styled to give it added lift!
